Ingredients
- 800 g waxy potatoes (thinly sliced)
- 200 ml heavy cream
- 200 ml milk
- 2 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 small onion (finely chopped)
- 100 g grated Emmental cheese
- 50 g grated Parmesan cheese
- A few sprigs of fresh thyme
- A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- Olive oil for greasing
Instructions
1. Get Everything Ready
- Thinly slice the potatoes using a mandoline or sharp knife. Keep them in water to prevent discoloration.
- In a mixing bowl, combine cream, milk, minced garlic, onion, nutmeg (if using), salt, and pepper.
2. Assemble Your Gratin
- Lightly grease the inside of your Bricknic brick with olive oil.
- Begin layering the potato slices in overlapping rows at the bottom of the brick.
- After each layer, sprinkle with Emmental cheese, thyme leaves, and pour a bit of the cream mixture.
- Repeat this process until all the ingredients are used.
- Finish with a layer of Parmesan cheese on top for a golden, crispy crust.
3. Cook to Perfection
- Place the filled Bricknic brick into a preheated oven at 200°C (390°F) or on a grill using indirect heat.
- Cook for about 60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender, and the top is beautifully golden and bubbling.
4. Serve and Enjoy
- Carefully remove the brick from the heat source (use oven mitts!).
- Let the gratin rest for 5 minutes to set.
- Garnish with fresh thyme sprigs and serve directly from the Bricknic brick for a rustic, family-style presentation.
