German Potato Gratin

German Potato Gratin

German Potato Gratin in the Bricknic Cooking Brick

Transform a classic German dish into something truly special using the Bricknic cooking brick! This recipe combines creamy, cheesy goodness with the unique rustic touch that only clay cooking can provide. Perfect for cozy family dinners or impressing your guests.

Ingredients

  • 800 g waxy potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 200 ml heavy cream
  • 200 ml milk
  • 2 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 100 g grated Emmental cheese
  • 50 g grated Parmesan cheese
  • A few sprigs of fresh thyme
  • A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Olive oil for greasing

Instructions

1. Get Everything Ready

  • Thinly slice the potatoes using a mandoline or sharp knife. Keep them in water to prevent discoloration.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine cream, milk, minced garlic, onion, nutmeg (if using), salt, and pepper.

2. Assemble Your Gratin

  • Lightly grease the inside of your Bricknic brick with olive oil.
  • Begin layering the potato slices in overlapping rows at the bottom of the brick.
  • After each layer, sprinkle with Emmental cheese, thyme leaves, and pour a bit of the cream mixture.
  • Repeat this process until all the ingredients are used.
  • Finish with a layer of Parmesan cheese on top for a golden, crispy crust.

3. Cook to Perfection

  • Place the filled Bricknic brick into a preheated oven at 200°C (390°F) or on a grill using indirect heat.
  • Cook for about 60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender, and the top is beautifully golden and bubbling.

4. Serve and Enjoy

  • Carefully remove the brick from the heat source (use oven mitts!).
  • Let the gratin rest for 5 minutes to set.
  • Garnish with fresh thyme sprigs and serve directly from the Bricknic brick for a rustic, family-style presentation.
